Universal Design: Technology Accessible to All
How can we make sure the technology we use, and offer, is accessible to everyone? ”Universal design” is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation. In this session, we’ll be talking about making (and keeping) technology barrier-free, ways to bridge the gap between technology and the affordances of those who use them, and the importance of innovating equitably.

Fighting Disinformation, Misinformation, and Spin: New Techniques in Online Media Literacy
Join author and instructional designer Mike Caulfield for a tour of new research in digital literacy on how best to teach students to sort fact from fiction (and everything in between) on the web. This is a workshop session that will introduce you to new techniques – please bring a laptop!

Mike Caulfield is currently the director of blended and networked learning at Washington State University Vancouver. He has worked in educational technology since 1997. Over the past eight years he has worked specifically on the intersection between digital literacies and civic participation. His most recent work draws from recent research on how fact-checkers quickly verify facts on the internet, and how that knowledge can be applied to improving the quality of digital literacy education at the undergraduate level.

TechTapas: Moodle User Tours
Have you ever been confused about where to find a certain Moodle section? Have you ever looked at a button on a Moodle page and thought “What does that do?” Nervous about students not knowing where certain activities or resources are located? They offer a comprehensive and engaging view of your data to provide key insight for at-a-glance decision making. In this session, we’ll look at dashboard components and create one from scratch.

Data Visualization
Data visualizations are everywhere!  But how to distinguish the meaningful from the flashy?  This workshop will take you back to the basics and focus on the nuts and bolts of data-presentation standbys: charts, graphs and tables. It’s akin to learning the grammar of presenting data.  But once mastered, you will have a framework for evaluating almost any visualization you encounter (no matter how flashy).  Because first Faulkner had to master grammar, before he could write a four-page long sentence that worked.
